Ahh-Laska
Ahhh-laska. Last Wednesday we drove over to Valdez from Palmer. The ride on the Glenn Highway was pretty cloudy with Dall Sheep up in the mountains to the north. About 50 miles outside of Glennallen it started to snow. About 30 miles out it was a blizzard and it was starting to slush the road up a little. We fueled at The Hub of Alaska and got a road hotdog.
About 15 miles south on the Richardson, the snow turned to rain and a few miles later it was dry. The sky eventually opened up to partly cloudy and we had a beautiful drive through Thompsons Pass. There were a few spots where you couldn’t count the avalanches, it seemed like every mountain face showed signs of a slide. The drive through Keystone Canyon was pretty, the water isn’t quite flowing like it does later in the year. Looking forward to more melt and fuller waterfalls.
We got settled into our temporary spot at the KOA and headed to town for lunch and a beer. It has been a long travel month. We met a bartender from Michigan at Valdez Brewing last year and she remembered us which was thought was pretty cool. We worked Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it’s amazing how much snow has already melted. The weather from Wednesday through Sunday was great. We are in the process of opening the campground for the season and making sure everything is operational after the winter.
One of our jobs was pumping the septic tanks and another co-workers rig. Katy and I made 5 trips with 600 gallons of septic contents to the prettiest $#!¥ pond there is. It’s pretty close to the ocean and there are also a ton of eagles to watch. I think they are trying to pick off the Ravens and Ducks.
The bears have been out on Duck Flats. No grizzlies yet, but I saw two of them out feeding last Thursday after an RV job and then we saw them yesterday afternoon on our bike ride into town. My RV customer gave me some Salmon and Rockfish so we made some Blackened Tacos yesterday and I have to say they were great.
We went back to work today in the rain and it looks like it’s going to be a wet work week ahead. We were talking the other day, Valdez on a sunny/partly cloudy day is probably our favorite place. It’s even beautiful on a rainy day. Today I found a bear den up on a steep cliff, the pics don’t show the dirty trail in the snow leading into the cave.
