We are Valdezians!

We’ve officially been in Valdez for three weeks.  It’s been quite a whirlwind.  We worked 16 of 18 days to get the campground ready for opening.  We took two Sundays off and then started our 7on/7off schedule.

With campground work, a few RV jobs, some bike rides and exploring town we’re pretty busy.  The landscape has gone from brown and snow to green and snow.  The bears are out in full force down on Duck Flats and we even saw a coyote and bear chasing each other around.  I think the coyote was trying to kill a cub.  The bald eagles are also all over the place.  There are also a bunch of Otters and Seals in the sound.

The bike trail to town and out to the refinery are awesome and I’m glad we’re by them.  I am looking at trading the road bike in for a Mtn Bike again.  Thousands of miles on it, but there’s a lot of trails and woods roads to bike in AK.  More than the pavement.

We did hit up the Valdez Fly In Airshow.  We missed the STOL competition (short take off & landing).  We did get to witness the flour drop and toilet paper cutting along with a prop demo team which was pretty cool.  It’s amazing how fast some of those bush planes get off the ground.

Yesterday we took a ride around the area and headed into Keystone Canyon.  The falls are starting to flow pretty good, way more water than 3 weeks ago.  Robe Lake is ice free and the glacier lake is starting to look pretty good.  It seems thawed enough that icebergs are moving.

With all the work, there isn’t much to report.  We have hit up most of the restaurants as they open for the season.  If you’ve followed us for any amount of time, you know we like to support local.  We like Poor Betty’s for halibut fish and chips.  Nat Shack for Crunch Wraps and Halibut Tacos.  Loco Gringo has good street tacos.  The Fat Mermaid had really good clam chowder according to Katy.  For me, it would be a bowl of death without an EpiPen.  I did enjoy their Rueben….  Turo Turo has good Thai food!  The Stamp mill has great pizza!

Most of the pictures will be of landscapes and I don’t think I have a current proof of life photos for Katy…. Sorry to her fan club.
