Wandering Around

The drive out of McCarthy was pretty uneventful, other than a trailer wiring fault and a smoking brake.  It cleared up after a while, but the trailer fault persisted.  The top speed out and back on the road was 27.  Worth the trip?  Yes!  The relaxation by the river was needed.  We stopped by Yolanda and Marks place and had lunch in Kenny Lake.  The Rueben was great.  I met them on my halibut trip and they are year round out at Kenny Lake.

The work week was busy and the park was packed.  Valdez is the Panama City of Alaska.  The party was on and thousands of dollars of fireworks went up with no colorful show due to the daylight.  RV work was busy with broken toilets, clogged black tanks and a stuck awning.

For the week off, we moved the rig over to Eklutna Lake SP outside of Palmer.  The park is great with space in between sites.  We regrouped in Anchorage and talked to an old friend/neighbor on the phone.  Of course we had fish tacos at 49th State with some Solstice and cider.  Wednesday we took a hike to Thunderbird Falls.  It was a nice out and back with a nice view of the falls at the end.  We also did three loads of laundry at Twin Peaks, just outside the park.  It’s really clean, reasonable and has a great view.  We spotted 3 bears and a Dall Sheep from the parking lot.

Thursday morning we were having some coffee and relaxing when the control board of our refrigerator quit working on gas.  It still works on 120 and 12v.  I went into town to figure out what the problem was.  Turns out a #2 error code means a new board.  There was not one in the Anchorage area so I ordered one from Portland.  Our food is in our new freezer/fridge and in two coolers with ice.  We’ll be back on hookups Saturday to finish our shopping over here.

We had a campfire after biking for ice and ice cream.  While we were sitting by the fire, Katy noticed a wire hanging by one of the axles.  I got underneath to find the new axle we got back in December, was installed poorly.  The axle itself is installed right, but the brake wire connections were loose or disconnected.  45 minutes under the trailer with my tool kit and we’re back in business.

Friday we drove up to Talkeetna.  We’ve been there two times before.  March of 2012 and mid September of 24.  It was very quiet those trips, but we finally experienced it in tourist season.  The temps were in the 70s and it was mostly clear.  Denali, The Great One, was visible for us which was awesome.  We’ve seen the mountain more times than not when we’ve been in line of sight distance to it.  This is a rarity.  We hit a few shops in town and had the Spinach Bread.  It lived up to the hype and is worth the stop, the Brazilian Limeaid is also worth it.

We finished shopping at Walmart and Freddie’s before the weekend was over and had a beautiful drive back to Valdez.  It was clear across the Glenn Hwy and 83* in Glenallen.

Our work week was typical and we decided to put in our two week notice.  No plans, we’ll see where it goes.
