Dawson City, Yukon Territory

9/6-7/25:  Dawson City, Yukon Territory.

“There’s a race of men who don’t fit in, a race that can’t stay still, so they break the hearts of kith and kin and roam the world at will.”  -Robert Service, The Men That Don’t Fit In.

Saturday we explored the town of Dawson City.  We went to town, parked at the river and wandered around.  We stopped by the Saturday market and hit a bunch of shops.  After the sun burned off the clouds, we drove up to Midnight Dome.  Back in the day, people would go up there with chairs and have a celebration on June 21/22 to see the midnight sun.  It’s still a popular place to see the area and there are several mountain bike trails around it.  Beautiful views in all directions on a clear day.

We sat on the bench that Art We There Yet helped build and talked with 3 ladies we saw in town.  They offered to take our picture on the bench and we did the same for them.  We talked quite a bit about travels, etc and one of them offered her driveway to us so we could park and fix our trailer.  They were very nice and it was fun chatting.

Back into town and we had a few drinks and lunch at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s.  Their regularly scheduled shows were on hold due to a big poker tournament.  People from all over the north were trying their best to win the $50,000 prize.  After

Lunch we wandered some more.  Stopping at the two grocery stores for supplies and Pie For Now for some sweet and savory treats.  It’s definitely worth a stop and is hard to find…maybe not with google.

The Sourdough was not open so I couldn’t try the SourToe cocktail.  They open at 5.  Back to the camper to unpack groceries and walk the dogs.  After completing those tasks, I decided to go back in and try it.  We arrived at 5:02 to find a sign that they moved it to the Eldo and it wasn’t going to be until 6.  I guess it wasn’t meant to be.  If you are curious, google “sourtoe cocktail, Dawson City”.

Our low gas light came on during the drive back so we filled up and then I started cleaning when we got home.  Dust, dust, everything/everywhere has dust.  I folded up shop after about an hour and called it a night.  It was supposed to be a great KP index for the Aurora, but the full moon and streetlights put the kibosh to that.

Sunday we started the day with some of our YouTube favorites while it was raining.  The rest of the day was cleaning the rig inside and out, the truck too and all of the contents…remember what I said about dust?  It was on and in everything.  We also did 4 loads of laundry for $40.  Katy made some chili and we watched a few more shows.  Nothing exciting to report.  On a side note, the Bonanza Campground will nickel and dime you for everything.  Want to use the sink in the laundry room?  $1 for 2-3 minutes.  Water at the dump station…that’ll cost you too.  Showers, that’ll cost ya.

Back on the road tomorrow, we have a date with a hardware store in Whitehorse so we can put our cabinet doors back up, along with the bathroom door.
